The Tasmanian worm eel〔(Common names of ''Scolecenchelys tasmaniensis'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 (''Scolecenchelys tasmaniensis'') is an eel in the family Ophichthidae (worm/snake eels).〔(''Scolecenchelys tasmaniensis'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 It was described by Alan Riverstone McCulloch in 1911, originally under the genus ''Muraenichthys''.〔McCulloch, A. R., 1911 (22 Dec.) (2936 ) ''Report on the fishes obtained by the F. I. S. "Endeavour," on the coasts of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.'' Part I. Biological Results Endeavour (1 ) (pt 1): 1-87, Pls. 1-16.〕 It is a marine, temperate water-dwelling eel which is endemic to southern Australia, in the eastern Indian Ocean.
